Rui Costa details Federal Government actions for COP30 in meeting with UN Climate Summit representative

Less than a week after the UN validated Brazil’s planning for COP30 Amazônia, Chief of Staff Minister Rui Costa welcomed UNFCCC Executive Secretary Simon Stiell to Brasília. Wednesday's agenda allowed Rui Costa to detail how the Federal Government's work is structured so that COP30, scheduled for November in Belém, presents consistent results in the fight against climate change.
To facilitate the city's preparations, "the Federal Government is investing BRL 4.7 billion, in addition to funds from the municipality and the state government. It is a tremendous effort that will match the symbolic significance of hosting a COP in the Amazon," Costa told Secretary Stiell.
The minister explained that the Office of the Chief of Staff is responsible for coordinating the infrastructure for the event and that President Lula recently announced the appointment of Ambassador André Corrêa do Lago to preside over COP30 and Ana Toni as CEO and Executive Director of the Conference. Other authorities present at Wednesday's meeting included the Extraordinary Secretary for COP30, Valter Correia.
The UN representative offered to support the government in seeking partnerships and sponsors, and reiterated the possibility of rescheduling the leaders' summit to an earlier date to ensure the city can accommodate heads of state and government with secure and standard-compliant lodging.
On this matter, the Chief of Staff Minister said that he sees no obstacles and emphasized that the schedule should be adjusted “to ensure there is no gap between this agenda and the event itself.” He also noted that President Lula will visit the city in the coming days to oversee preparations and that the presence of State Ministers in Belém will increase over the next few months to ensure close monitoring of both planning and execution.
Costa also announced that the city and state governments will mandate school closures and remote work during the summit. He added that the government is closely monitoring the hotel capacity and working to secure high-end residential properties for rental during COP30.
