The G20 Social’s great gathering of voices from around the world is getting closer by the day. For the first time in the history of the G20 Leaders' Summit, there will be a Social Summit, organized to listen to the voices and gather the suggestions of citizens of the world’s 19 most powerful economies, plus the European Union and the African Union. This pioneering event was conceived by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and proposed when Brazil assumed the presidency of the Group. Since then, the Minister of the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic [Secretaria-Geral da Presidência da República], Márcio Macêdo, was appointed by the President to coordinate the G20 Social.
Hundreds of meetings with engagement groups and organized civil society entities have already taken place in Brazil and across G20 member countries. The suggestions generated from these meetings were organized and compiled into a draft text, which was then opened for public consultation through the Brasil Participativo platform. This platform allowed both Brazilian and international citizens to submit individual contributions. The participatory process will culminate in the G20 Social Summit, set for November 14, 15, and 16, with activities centered in Rio de Janeiro, between Praça Mauá and Boulevard Olímpico.
Throughout the three-day program, civil society organizations will lead self-managed activities to discuss the three thematic priorities set by the Brazilian presidency: the fight against hunger, poverty, and inequality; addressing climate change and ensuring a fair energy transition; and reimagining global governance. The event will conclude with a large plenary session dedicated to reviewing and endorsing the final text.
Around 180 stalls will be part of a fair throughout the event, selling food, publications, services, and crafts. Moreover, the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty Festival will feature shows by major Brazilian artists on the three nights of the G20 Social.
