Brazil has achieved a new milestone in tourism, moving up in the global ranking for domestic flights to become the fourth-largest market worldwide in 2024, accounting for 1.2% of all domestic flights. Data released by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) show that Brazil’s recovery in passenger numbers on domestic flights mirrors the pace of top-ranking countries like the United States, China, and Japan in the post-pandemic period.
"This is yet another achievement that reflects the Federal Government's progress in enhancing the domestic landscape by promoting economic and social stability, encouraging domestic travel, upgrading tourism infrastructure, attracting investments, and supporting the creation of new routes and flights," said Tourism Minister Celso Sabino.
The country recorded a 6.6% increase in domestic travel, surpassing the global market average growth of 5.6%. According to IATA, by July last year, 44 million passengers had been transported domestically, while September was the best in Brazilian aviation history for number of travelers.
Data from the National Civil Aviation Agency (Agência Nacional de Aviação Civil / ANAC) corroborate this analysis. In September, 80% of the around 10 million tourists that crossed Brazilian airports flew to domestic destinations.
The Federal Government has been incentivizing and facilitating domestic travel for Brazilian nationals. Last year, the Ministry of Tourism (Ministério do Turismo) partnered with the Ministry of Ports and Airports (Ministério de Portos e Aeroportos), the Brazilian Association of Air Companies (Associação Brasileiras das Empresas Aéreas / ABEAR) and air companies Azul, Gol, Latam, and Voepass to launch the “Discover Brazil: Take Flight” (“Conheça o Brasil: Voando”) program, which expanded and diversified flights.
