The Conference of the African Diaspora was held in Salvador, the capital of the state of Bahia, Brazil, from August 29 to 31, 2024. Participants included government representatives and leaders from African and American countries, representatives from international and regional organizations, experts from civil society, such as researchers and thinkers dedicated to the theme, and figures of reference from social movements and the cultural, private and public sectors.
Unprecedented as a large event organization process for the Pan-African Congress, the Conference results from a partnership between the African Union, the Government of Togo, the Brazilian Federal Government and the State Government of Bahia, with the support of the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA) and the Brazil-Africa Institute (IBRAF). The conference reaffirms Brazil's commitment to the African Union and the countries that compose the African Diaspora in the Americas, strengthening dialogue and cooperation in areas such as economic development, social justice, racial equality, human rights and culture.
Over 50 delegations from African and American countries and international organizations participated in the event. The Conference constituted a landmark in the history of Pan-African Congresses for its role in strengthening the voices of the African Continent's 6th region, which represents the African Diaspora in the African Union.
The wide diversity of civil society representatives from the African Diaspora created the space for the joint elaboration of the Conference of the African Diaspora's Letter of Recommendations, which was built upon the discussions on four themes: Pan-Africanism; Memory; Reconstruction; Reparation; and Restitution.
Formally delivered by civil society members to African Union representatives during the closing session of the Conference on August 31, the Letter will now be sent to the representatives of the 9th Pan-African Congress to be held in Lomé from October 29 to November 02 this year.
