Brazil’s Ministry of Mines and Energy [Ministério de Minas e Energia/MME] published this week in the Official Gazette of the Union [Diário Oficial da União/DOU] a technical cooperation agreement to implement a regulatory framework for the introduction of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) in Brazil. The agreement is valid for 60 months and was signed between the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (Agência Nacional do Petróleo, Gás Natural e Biocombustíveis/ANP), linked to the MME, and the National Civil Aviation Agency [Agência Nacional de Aviação Civil/ANAC].
Minister of Mines and Energy Alexandre Silveira said the technical cooperation is in line with Law No. 528/2020, also called the Fuel of the Future Bill — which establishes the National Sustainable Aviation Fuel Program [Programa Nacional de Combustível Sustentável de Aviação/ProBioQAV]. The initiative also provides for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by the aviation sector through sustainable aviation fuels.
“Fuel of the Future is the world’s largest program to decarbonize the transportation and mobility matrix; with it, we will achieve considerable progress in ethanol, biodiesel, sustainable aviation fuel, green diesel, and carbon capture. This puts Brazil at the forefront of a fair, inclusive, and balanced energy transition,” highlighted the minister.
Among the goals of the agreement is the creation of an informal forum called Conexão SAF, to be attended by agencies and representatives of the various segments interested in developing a SAF market in Brazil. This forum will also be the vehicle for the preparation of studies focused on the challenges in establishing a solid SAF market in Brazil.
