Brazil's Cities Ministry joins discussion of Climate Change Adaptation Plans
Brasília (DF) - On July 9, Brazil's Ministry of Cities officials participated in a meeting focused on developing sectoral and thematic plans for climate change adaptation. The event, held in Brasilia, was attended by members of the Cities Adaptation Working Group (GT-Cidades Adaptação), set up by Minister Jader Filho specifically to work on the Ministry of Cities' sectoral plan.
Under the coordination of the National Secretariat for Urban and Metropolitan Development (Secretaria Nacional de Desenvolvimento Urbano e Metropolitano), the Cities Adaptation WG includes representatives from all the secretariats of the Ministry of Cities (Housing, Sanitation, Mobility, and Peripheries), the Executive Secretariat, and the Minister's Office.
The workshop was organized by the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change with the main goal of providing information and guidance on how to elaborate and refine sectoral objectives, drawing from practical examples of adaptation measures. During the event, the specific challenges and demands of each sector were discussed, promoting a collaborative environment and fostering experience exchanges among participants.
The Ministry of Cities’ participation reflects its commitment to integrating climate change adaptation policies into its urban initiatives. The Cities Adaptation WG team highlighted the importance of developing strategies that account for the peculiarities of Brazilian cities, ensuring that adaptation measures are effective and sustainable.
In addition to discussing sectoral objectives, the workshop also provided a space for representatives from the various government sectors to share their experiences and best practices. The knowledge exchange among the different sectors is key to building integrated and efficient plans for adapting to climate change.
Recognizing that adaptation policies primarily unfold at the state and municipal levels, the Ministry of Cities will soon launch a participatory process on the Redus platform to develop the Cities Sector Plan. This inclusive approach invites public contributions to shape this crucial plan, aligning it closely with community expectations.
