Minister of Social Development and Assistance, Family and Hunger Combat (MDS) Wellington Dias underscored Brazil’s commitment to leading the global fight against hunger and poverty. On Tuesday, June 25, the head of the MDS took part in the IV Social Development Regional Seminar, promoted by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), hosted in a hybrid format in Santiago, Chile. The event brought together leaders and experts to discuss regional challenges of social protection and inequality and served as preparation for the 2025 II World Summit for Social Development.
During his participation in a panel on "Social Inequality, Mobility and Cohesion: Rights and Public Policies", Wellington Dias highlighted President Lula’s proposal to create a Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty, to be launched during the G20 Summit in November. This initiative seeks to unite countries, international organizations, the private sector and civil society in a joint effort to achieve Sustainable Development Goals 1 and 3, which aim to eradicate poverty and hunger worldwide until 2030.
The minister urged Latin American and Caribbean countries to engage in the Global Alliance, both to receive knowledge and resources and to share their experiences with social programs. "Concrete participation of Latin American and Caribbean countries will be key. Our region has cutting-edge experiences in fighting hunger and poverty that can be directly relevant for other regions," he said.
The ECLAC seminar addressed challenges faced by Latin America, such as low economic growth and high social inequality. Social protection is important for countering the region's issues. The Global Alliance, led by Brazil and developed within the G20 framework, calls for robust international participation. The Alliance's terms will be negotiated at the bloc's ministerial on July 24.
Wellington Dias said nations should seize this opportunity to implement national policies to combat hunger and poverty with verified efficacy, based on scientific evidence. "As bleak as the situation may seem, the better world we promised in 2015 remains within our reach", declared the minister. "Let’s unite in the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty!” he urged.
Also in attendance were Chile’s Minister of Social Development and Family, Javiera Toro; Ecuador’s Minister of Economic and Social Inclusion, Zaida Rovira; Oxfam's Program Director for Latin America and the Caribbean andrea Costafreda; and Brazil's National Secretary of Care and Family, Laís Abramo.
