The Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACtHR) is holding its next period of sessions in Brazil between May 20 and 29. This session’s broad agenda includes an international seminar, public hearings and other activities aimed at familiarizing the Brazilian public with the court’s operation. These events will be live-streamed on the court’s YouTube channel and specific activities will be open for public participation, with prior registration.
The international seminar “Challenges and impacts of the Jurisprudence of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights” is scheduled for May 20 at the Federal Supreme Court (Supremo Tribunal Federal/STF). It will follow the official opening of the 167th Ordinary Session, which the court will hold in Brasília and Manaus, at Brazil’s invitation.
The seminar will include several panels and speakers and will be attended by ministers from Brazil’s Federal Supreme Court, Superior Court of Justice (Superior Tribunal de Justiça) and Federal Attorney General's Office (Advocacia-Geral da União), as well as IACtHR and representatives from civil society.
On Wednesday (22) the Court will hold a public hearing on the case Adolescents held in Short- and Long-term Detention Facilities run by the National Children's Service (SENAME) v. Chile. The case was brought by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) to the Court in December 2021 and concerns the poor living conditions found in four detention centers for hundreds of adolescents in Chile.
In a statement, the Court president, Judge Nancy Hernández López, explained that the International Court “will not receive complaints, nor hear victims of new cases or examine general or particular human rights situations, except those referring to cases included on the working agenda scheduled for this visit”.
Furthermore, in exercising its advisory jurisdiction, the Inter-American Court will convene a public hearing to address the request for an advisory opinion on the implications of climate emergency for human rights.
On Tuesday (21), Minister Silvio Almeida, of Brazil’s Ministry of Human Rights and Citizenship (Ministério dos Direitos Humanos e da Cidadania) will welcome the IACtHR delegation.
About the Inter-American Court of Human Rights - For over four decades, the International Court has focused on violations of human rights cases recognized under the American Convention on Human Rights (Pact of San José, Costa Rica) and other relevant treaties.
