Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva spoke today (October 14) over the phone with the President of the Palestinian National Authority Mahmoud Abbas — leader of the Palestinian people — in search of support for Brazilians fleeing Gaza. Lula recalled Brazil’s recognition of the Palestinian State.

Lula also expressed concern about civilians in the region and the blocking of humanitarian aid. The Brazilian president condemned the terrorist attacks against civilians in Israel, and stressed that a humanitarian corridor and the immediate release of all hostages are crucial. Lula said that the innocent people of Gaza must not pay the price for the insanity of those who want war. Both leaders reiterated the importance of searching for a political solution and peace for the region.

Lula highlighted Brazil's willingness to help in the quest for peace.
