Press release

On Monday, March 10, the President of the Republic, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, received a telephone call from UN Secretary General António Guterres to discuss the mobilization for COP30 in Belém, in the Brazilian state of Pará.

President Lula emphasized the importance of aligning new objectives for greenhouse gas emissions reduction — which will be presented by the countries later this year — with the goal of keeping the global temperature increase below 1.5 ºC.

Guterres informed that he contacted representatives from over 30 countries in the past 30 days, almost all of which are working to present their new goals soon.

As part of the Brazil-UN Partnership for Climate Ambition, launched last September, Lula and Guterres agreed to organize a summit to assess the work’s progress, foster the elaboration of ambitious goals and discuss ways to strengthen multilateralism to collectively respond to the climate change challenge.

The event is expected to be held next April, through video conferencing.
