President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva with ministers this Tuesday, January 28, to discuss the reception of Brazilian nationals repatriated from the United States due to anti-immigration measures. The Federal Government wants to ensure the deportation process complies with human rights and to assist individuals to resettle in Brazil.
Our whole expectation is that we can work to ensure that families are not separated and that these passengers have good conditions of water, food and even temperature, which seems to me to be the most damaging thing in the process of this flight".
Macaé Evaristo, Minister of Human Rights and Citizenship
According to Minister of Foreign Affairs Mauro Vieira, during the meeting, President Lula was informed about the conditions observed during the flight that brought 88 Brazilian nationals who were repatriated from the US last week. “The goal of the meeting, in addition to informing the President about the situation, was to discuss ways to address the issue going forward and to engage with US authorities to emphasize that deportations—which we consider repatriations—must be conducted in accordance with basic standards of dignity and human rights, ensuring passengers receive the necessary care for such a long journey,” stated Mauro Vieira.
On Saturday (25) evening, a KC-30 aircraft from the Brazilian Air Force (Força Aérea Brasileira/FAB), carrying the repatriated Brazilians, landed at Confins International Airport in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. The flight was initially expected to arrive on Friday (24) evening, but technical issues forced it to land in Manaus, Amazonas.
President Lula ordered that the Brazilian nationals be transported from Manaus to Belo Horizonte to ensure they completed their journey with dignity and safety. The Brazilians who arrived in Manaus in handcuffs were received and immediately released by the Federal Police (Polícia Federal), following orders from the Minister of Justice and Public Security, Ricardo Lewandowski, reaffirming Brazil’s sovereignty over its national territory. The Federal Police also prohibited US authorities from restraining the Brazilian nationals again.
RECEPTION POSTS — Brazil's Minister of Human Rights and Citizenship Macaé Evaristo, who was in Minas Gerais to welcome the Brazilians deported from the US, announced this Tuesday that President Lula has authorized the Ministry to iniciate conversations to establish a humanitarian reception post in Confins, Minas Gerais, considering there may be other deportations. “We wholeheartedly expect to be able to ensure that families are not separated and that these passengers have adequate access to water, food, even temperature, which seems to me to have been the most detrimental aspect in the process of this flight,” she stated.
According to the Minister, one of the concerns is to assist these Brazilians to access the labor market. “We have already received indications from some companies that are interested in engaging with us to explore mechanisms for productive inclusion in the workforce for these individuals. It is also very important for us to have the support of state governments and municipal departments. So we want to establish this dialog,” stated the minister. “They are our citizens who are coming home and I believe we must welcome them in the best way possible,” underscored Macaé Evaristo.
DIALOG — The meeting was also attended by Vice President Geraldo Alckmin; ministers Ricardo Lewandowski (Justice and Public Security), José Múcio (Defense), and Sidônio Palmeira (Social Communications Secretariat); the Executive Secretary at the Office of the Chief of Staff, Miriam Belchior; Air Force General Marcelo Damasceno; Federal Police General Director Andrei Rodrigues; and Celso Amorim, Head Advisor at the Special Advisory to the President of the Republic.
