President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva hosted a meeting with Anne Hidalgo, Mayor of Paris, this Saturday, November 16, at the Copacabana Fort in Rio de Janeiro. Hidalgo is in Brazil for the Urban 20 event, the world's largest meeting of cities. The event preceded the G20, with the participation of representatives from cities such as Phoenix, New Orleans, Barcelona, Johannesburg, and Montreal. One of the themes discussed at Urban 20 is the search for increased financing for the cities to address climate change and the energy transition.
Also in attendance at the meeting this Saturday were the Mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes, the ministers of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, and Finance, Fernando Haddad, and the Special Advisor to the President of the Republic, Celso Amorim.
Lula and Hidalgo discussed the political situation of Europe and Brazil and the reconstruction of Brazil's international role in the world. They also spoke about public policies regarding the partnership between Brazilian cities and the Federal Government, such as the New Growth Acceleration Program (Novo PAC), for example, through which municipalities can present project proposals to be financed by the Federal Government. President Lula recalled that, during the previous administration, there was no dialogue between Brasilia and the municipalities.
