On Tuesday, September 24, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva held a bilateral meeting with King Abdullah II of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The meeting took place in New York on the sidelines of the 79th United Nations General Assembly.
The meeting's primary focus was the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, with a particular emphasis on the humanitarian crisis resulting from the continuing conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Both leaders provided insights into potential avenues for achieving a ceasefire and securing the release of hostages.
Another item on the agenda was the potential escalation of regional confrontations following the recent hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon.
The discussion also addressed the potential for enhanced trade relations between Brazil and Jordan, which have not yet reached their full potential. In 2022, the trade flow between Brazil and Jordan reached USD 581 million, with a surplus of USD 219 million on the Brazilian side. Brazil's primary exports to Jordan include chicken meat, corn, beef, and coffee, while Jordan's main exports to Brazil are fertilizers.
In addition to trade, the meeting addressed the increasing flow of Brazilian tourists to Jordan, which is home to several significant "Holy Land" sites. Bilateral cooperation in defense, security, and intelligence was also a key topic of discussion.
