SUMITT OF THE FUTURE
President Lula issues global call for the Summit of the Future in New York
Friends,
In a few days, we will meet in New York at the Summit of the Future.
I thank Chancellor Olaf Scholz and President Nangolo Mbumba for leading us along the way while Germany and Namibia served as facilitators of the Pact for the Future.
Since World War II, multilateralism has borne many fruits.
Understanding the past eight decades is impossible without considering the role of the UN and the Bretton Woods institutions.
Or without referencing concepts such as decolonization, disarmament, human rights and sustainable development.
However, just as with any child who grows and matures, the clothes we wore in 1945 no longer fit us today.
For over twenty years we have been talking about reforming global governance.
We have been running around in circles.
Now it is time to take action.
Brazil is driving a renewed push for global governance reform through its G20 presidency.
However, this debate also needs to take place at the UN, the most inclusive of all forums.
We encourage everyone to attend the Summit for the Future with the ambition of advancing meaningful reforms.
The Security Council’s composition needs to be expanded both for permanent and non-permanent members.
Meeting the sustainable development goals requires the World Bank and the IMF to better meet the needs of the Global South.
This will only be possible if developing countries have more space in these organizations.
Countering climate change requires organizations with the authority to promote the implementation of commitments.
The Global Alliance against Hunger, which we will launch at the G20, will be open to all UN countries.
It is born from the political will and the spirit of solidarity to face this wound that still haunts humanity.
We must leave future generations a renewed, legitimate, and effective multilateral system.
Thank you very much.
