President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva met with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in New York on Monday, September 23, at the German mission in New York City.
The two leaders spoke about the COP29 meetings, to be held in November 2024 in Baku, Azerbaijan, and COP30, scheduled for 2025 in the city of Belém, in the Brazilian state of Pará. The German Chancellor confirmed his attendance at the G20 Leaders’ Summit, which will take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on November 18 and 19 this year.
Lula and Scholz also discussed the continuation of the High-Level Intergovernmental Consultations between Germany and Brazil, which last took place in Berlin in December 2023 and are due to resume in Brazil in 2025.
The meeting on Monday took place before a lunch hosted by the Germans and also attended by the Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Mottley; the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau; the President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo; and the President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez.
ALIGNMENT – After the Second Meeting of High-Level Intergovernmental Consultations in December 2023 in Berlin, the leaders of Brazil and Germany issued a joint press statement confirming their alignment on a number of issues. These included the promotion of green industrialization, low-carbon agriculture, the bioeconomy, and the goal of zero deforestation by 2030.
On the occasion, Scholz also advocated that the ecological transition process must result in job creation in Brazil, with greater processing of raw materials by the Brazilian industry.
G20 – In June 2024, during official engagements at the G7 in Italy, President Lula met again with Chancellor Scholz and emphasized the agendas related to the G20. In this context, Lula invited Germany to join the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty, one of Brazil's priorities ahead of the G20 Presidency, and emphasized the need to reform global governance institutions.
The leaders also discussed the agreement between Mercosur and the European Union and the World Trade Organization.
