President Lula talks over the phone with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva made a phone call to UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Wednesday morning (31/7). During their 15-minute conversation, Lula congratulated the British PM on the Labour Party's victory in the recent election. He also extended an invitation to Starmer to visit Brazil, which has not been visited by a UK prime minister in twelve years.
The Brazilian president emphasized his wish to strengthen bilateral ties and observed that 2025 will mark 200 years of diplomatic relations between Brazil and the UK. Lula stressed that he is counting on Starmer's presence at the G20 Summit next November and emphasized the launch of the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty on 24 July. He also invited the UK to join the initiative, one of Brazil's priority proposals as president of the group.
Starmer confirmed the UK's interest in collaborating with Brazil on climate change, particularly in light of COP 30 in Belém. Lula also invited Starmer to attend the meeting of democratic countries against extremism, to be held next September in New York, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
