Lula holds phone conversation with U.S. President Joe Biden
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva received a phone call this Tuesday, July 30, from United States President Joe Biden. The conversation lasted around half an hour during which the two leaders discussed bilateral and multilateral issues as well as the situation in Venezuela. Biden thanked Lula for the joint work on the Partnership for Workers’ Rights and the energy transition agenda.
Biden confirmed his attendance at the G20 Summit in November in Rio de Janeiro and wished the Brazilian presidency success in leading the group.
Regarding Venezuela, Lula noted that he has been permanently following the electoral process through Special Advisor Celso Amorim, who was sent to Caracas. He informed that Amorim met with Nicolás Maduro and Edmundo González Urrutia and reiterated Brazil’s commitment to working towards normalizing the political process in the neighboring country, which will have positive effects for the entire region. Lula reaffirmed that publishing the election records from last Sunday's vote is essential. Biden agreed on the importance of releasing the records.
President Biden stated that both countries' economies are going well and that the partnership between Brazil and the U.S. must continue to grow.
Lula invited Biden to take part in the democratic countries’ meeting against extremism, scheduled for September in New York at the margins of the UN General Assembly.
At the end of the call, the Brazilian President congratulated Biden on the “magnanimous” decision regarding the U.S. electoral process and wished the country’s democracy success in the upcoming presidential elections in November.
