President Lula receives call from Vladimir Putin
On the morning of June 10, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva received a call from Russian President Vladimir Putin, who offered his solidarity to the victims of the floods in Rio Grande do Sul. The presidents discussed bilateral economic cooperation and multilateral governance.
Putin mentioned the recent visit of BRICS Bank President Dilma Rousseff to the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.
Regarding Ukraine, President Lula reiterated his defense of peace negotiations involving both sides of the conflict, in line with a document signed by presidential advisor Celso Amorim and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi.
President Lula also stressed the need for broad reform of the global governance system to reflect new global geopolitical arrangements and to reinforce the role of the United Nations in conflict mediation and prevention. This topic is under discussion at the G20.
The presidents also discussed Vice President Geraldo Alckmin's recent visit to China to attend the Sino-Brazilian High-Level Commission for Concertation and Cooperation, and acknowledged the presence of Minister Mauro Vieira at the ongoing meeting of BRICS foreign ministers in Russia.
