PARIS 2024
Brazil to send 250 athletes to world's largest Paralympic competition
Less than 100 days remain before the opening of the 17th Paralympic Games – Paris 2024, the world’s largest sports competition for people with disabilities. The global event is set to bring together some 4,400 athletes, competing in 22 sports from August 28 to September 8.
Brazil’s Sports Minister, André Fufuca, highlighted enthusiastically the achievements of the world's largest sports income distribution program, Bolsa Atleta, which benefits many of the athletes who will compete in Paris. "We work with the Brazilian Paralympic Committee [CPB] to support the continuous development of our Paralympic athletes. Through commitment and a lot of hard work, Brazil has achieved increasingly better outcomes over recent periods of Paralympic competitions," said Fufuca.
"We are confident in our work and in the dedication of our athletes, which should result in a record number of medals and in the rise of new Paralympic sporting idols who will inspire future generations of athletes. Expectations for Paris are high and we believe our athletes are ready to show the world the strength and determination of Brazilian paralympic sports, raising Brazil's profile even higher on the international stage," said Fábio Araújo, the Ministry's National Secretary for Paralympic Sport.
According to the CPB, Brazil should bring 250 athletes to the Paris Games. Currently the Brazilian delegation has secured the participation of 163 athletes in the following athletic events: 37 in track and field, three in badminton, 37 in swimming, 24 in sitting volleyball (male and female), 12 in goalball (male and female), eight in blind soccer, two in cycling, two in equestrianism, eight in canoeing, one in rowing, six in taekwondo, one in shooting, four in archery, seven in boccia and 11 in table tennis. The number of non-disabled athletes, such as goalkeepers, guide athletes, limbers, pilots and coxswains, is still to be confirmed. The final squad will be announced between June and July.
Brazil has just announced two more para athletes, for badminton, and the Brazilian Canoeing Confederation (CBCa) recently announced that it increased its roster for Paris from seven to eight.
Brazil sent 235 para athletes to the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games. Brazil had a record delegation of para athletes during the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, with 278 athletes in all 22 disciplines.
Over the history of the Paralympic Games, Brazil has won 373 medals, including 109 gold, 132 silver and 132 bronze: it is 27 medals shy of its 400th Paralympic podium.
Before the games begin, the Brazilian athletes will acclimatize in the French city of Troyes, 160 km from Paris, at the Centre Sportif de L'Aube Troyes, where the athletes will stay until the start of the mega-event.
Brazil had its best Paralympic campaign in Tokyo 2020, winning 72 medals, the same as in the Rio 2016 Games. Of these, 22 were gold, exceeding the 21 from London 2012. Brazilian para athletes won an additional 20 silver and 30 bronze medals in Japan.
