Brazil is going to host the 10th edition of the FIFA Women's World Cup in 2027. The announcement was made in the early hours of Friday, May 17, at FIFA’s 74th congress in Bangkok, Thailand. This will bring the World Cup to South America for the first time. Brazil competed against a group bid by Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium.
“Brazil is ready! This will be a World Cup for Brazil and for all of South America, and will mark a new moment for women's soccer on our continent,” said Brazil’s Minister of Sports, André Fufuca, who led the Brazilian Government’s delegation to the event.
The minister highlighted Brazil’s winning bid as an opportunity to promote gender equality and to develop women's soccer: "The players will be an inspiration for future generations and will help Brazil create a lasting and positive impact on society, promoting inclusion, diversity and equality in sport."
KNOWHOW – Brazil's infrastructure was considered a strong point by FIFA. In 2014, the country hosted the men's World Cup and, in 2016, the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Ten of the 12 venues used in 2014 are scheduled to host games in 2027. Brazil's BID also highlighted its proven expertise in promoting major events and unique ability to use women's soccer to promote social inclusion.
VENUES – Brazil plans to host Women’s World Cup matches in Belo Horizonte, Brasília, Cuiabá, Fortaleza, Manaus, Porto Alegre, Recife, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, and São Paulo. The Brazilian Football Confederation (Confederação Brasileira de Futebol/CBF) and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s government both supported the winning bid. To Minister André Fufuca, the necessary sports infrastructure is already good to go, a fact that emphasizes efficiency and financial responsibility. “All of these strengths, together with Brazil’s unparalleled hospitality, make it the perfect stage for the 2027 Women’s World Cup,” he said.
SOLIDARITY – The minister also mentioned the struggle of the people of Rio Grande do Sul in facing the greatest climate tragedy in Brazilian history. “We also want to dedicate this victory to our brothers and sisters in Rio Grande do Sul. I want to reiterate the commitment of President Lula and the Federal Government to helping rebuild the state. We will spare no efforts to help our people get back on their feet in the shortest possible time, so that we can celebrate, together, another victory for Brazil,” said the minister.
DATE AND FORMAT – Brazil plans to hold the tournament being held between June 24 and July 25, 2027. The competition will feature 32 countries and 64 matches. The opening and final matches are expected to be played in the Maracanã stadium, in Rio de Janeiro.
OPPORTUNITY – Julia Gelli, director of Women's Football Promotion at the Ministry of Sports (Ministério dos Esportes), said she believes that the 2027 Women's World Cup will leave an immense legacy to Brazil and help consolidate a legacy not only in sports, but also in the social, economic and cultural fields as well. “If in the past women were prohibited from playing soccer, in the present they are gaining a deserved and strategic space to reduce the inequality of opportunities between men and women,” said Julia.
BEHIND THE SCENES – The Brazilian presentation at the congress combined technology, passion and technical competence. It featured an interaction between an AI named Iara and the on-site presenter. In their conversation, they highlighted Brazil’s natural beauties, history of organizing mega events, established infrastructure, hospitable people, coexisting diversity, respect for indigenous peoples, national passion for soccer and focus on sustainability. The presentation also highlighted the fact that Brazil is the land of soccer’s king and queen, Pelé and Marta. Ministers Cida Gonçalves (Women/Mulheres), Anielle Franco (Racial Equality/Igualdade Racial), Sonia Guajajara (Indigenous Peoples/Povos Indígenas), Luciana Santos (Science and Technology/Ciência e Tecnologia) and Margareth Menezes (Culture/Cultura) joined on a virtual appearance historic athletes such as Sissi, Marta and Cafu, twice world champion for the national team, to urge the world to vote for Brazil as a "natural choice".
