The Brazilian government is observing the political situation in Venezuela with great attention and interest.
Brazil continues to support the implementation of the Barbados agreements that were signed on October 17, 2023, between the government of Venezuela and opposition forces gathered in the Unitary Platform (Plataforma Unitaria).
The agreements—which established parameters for presidential elections to be held this year—resulted from dialogue between the government and opposition. This dialogue, in turn, was mediated by Norway and received support from Brazil and the US, among others.
This was the message conveyed by President Lula's special advisor Celso Amorim in the conversation he held over the phone last Friday (2/2) with the president of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, and Unitary Platform representative Gerardo Blyde.
The Brazilian government favors the continuity of dialogues and encourages the parties to continue building mutual trust.
Brazil reiterates its well-known position against sanctions, which violate international law and penalize the population.
