Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Minister of Mines and Energy Alexandre Silveira received the Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (AIE), Fatih Birol, in Brasília, this Wednesday, January 30.
Energy transition and social inclusion were the main topics of the meeting, in which Birol offered the IEA's support to Brazil in organizing the G20 and COP30—the latter to be held in Belém do Pará in 2025.
Birol highlighted the importance of Brazil's vision in the field of energy, understanding the energy transition as a tool to promote greater social inclusion.
Both the Brazilian government and the IEA consider it essential that inclusion, as well as lower-income countries’ conditions, be considered in the energy transition agenda.
The status of the international energy market and Brazil's advantageous position in renewable energies—such as biofuels, wind and solar power—were also discussed.
Brazil has been an associate member of the IEA —which turns 50 in 2024— since 2017. In recent years, the Brazilian government and the agency have been intensifying bilateral collaboration, especially on topics such as fair energy transition, financing for this energy transition, and bioenergy.
This year, the agency participates as a guest in the Energy Transitions Working Group and the G20 Task Force for Global Mobilization against Climate Change under the Brazilian presidency.
The IEA is one of the world's most respected organizations in the energy sector. Its publications —such as the “World Energy Outlook” and “Net Zero by 2050”— are a reference in the decision-making processes of governments and companies.
