MMA and MRE presented the G20 Environment and Climate Sustainability WG
The Ministries of the Environment and Climate Change (MMA) and Foreign Affairs (MRE) held a virtual presentation session of the G20 Environment and Climate Sustainability Working Group this Friday (January 26) at 11am. The opening was attended by Minister Marina Silva and Ambassador André Corrêa do Lago, Secretary for Climate, Energy and the Environment at the MRE.
The meeting was attended by civil society organizations through online registration.
The working group will seek to identify concrete and innovative solutions to the climate emergency, as well as to promote cooperation among G20 countries in their implementation. The Brazilian presidency of the G20 has proposed four thematic axes for the group:
- Preventive and emergency adaptation to extreme climate events;
- Payments for ecosystem services;
- Oceans;
- Waste and the circular economy.
The meeting's goal was to encourage and strengthen the participation of civil society in discussions and the development of public policies related to the themes proposed by the WG. See the program below.
The G20, which includes 19 countries, the European Union and the African Union, is the primary forum for international economic cooperation and works to define and strengthen the architecture and global governance of the world's major economic issues. Brasil holds the rotating presidency of the group from December 1, 2023 to November 30, 2024.
The G20 has two parallel tracks: the Sherpa Track and the Finance Track. Under the Brazilian presidency, the Sherpa Track will have 15 working groups, as well as two task forces and a bioeconomy initiative.
Additional dialogue sessions on the Environment and Climate Sustainability WG are scheduled for the coming months.
