Lula talks with Colombian president about wildfires that hit Colombian territory
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva spoke by telephone on Monday, January 29, with Colombian President Gustavo Petro. The two leaders discussed the wildfires currently raging in Colombia, which could spread to other South American countries.
President Petro suggested the creation of a regional fire prevention station. President Lula recalled that the issue was raised at the meeting of South American foreign ministers and defense ministers last November, and proposed a new meeting to set up a Working Group within the framework of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO), which would make it possible to advance joint efforts to combat outbreaks of fire in the Amazon region.
In the conversation, President Lula also offered the Brazilian government's help to Colombia in fighting the fire.
Finally, Lula took the opportunity to accept President Petro's invitation to visit Colombia in April this year, on the Bogotá International Book Fair, which will honor Brazil.
