Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva talked over the phone with President of Israel Isaac Herzog this Thursday afternoon (October 12).
The Brazilian leader thanked the Israelis for their support in operations to remove Brazilian citizens from the conflict zone in the Middle East. By the beginning of this evening, 494 Brazilian citizens had been safely sent to Brazil on three flights from Israel.
To Herzog, Lula reaffirmed Brazil's condemnation of the terrorist attacks and its solidarity towards the victims' families. Lula also renewed an appeal he had made on Wednesday for the creation of a humanitarian corridor to remove children from conflict zones and to ensure that there is no lack of water, electricity and medicine in hospitals.
"I asked the President for all possible ways of ensuring that there is no shortage of water, electricity and medicine in hospitals. Innocent people must not be made victims of the insanity of those who want war. I appealed for a humanitarian corridor — so that people who want to leave the Gaza Strip through Egypt may be safe to do so. And reminded him that Brazil is available to try to find a path towards peace," wrote the President on his profile on X.
Also this Thursday, Brazil called for a UN Nations Security Council meeting. Brazil's Minister of Foreign Affairs Mauro Vieira will host the event this Friday (October 13) in New York. The humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, threats to security and world peace and developments in the conflict in the Middle East are all on the agenda.
ROTATIONAL – Brazil assumed the rotating Presidency of the United Nations Security Council this month, occupying one of the 10 Council positions for non-permanent member until the end of this year.
Brazil is also one of the largest participants among non-permanent members of the UN Security Council, second only to Japan. This is Brazil's 11th term since creation of the body in 1948.
