PRESS RELEASE
Brazil’s President Lula and Minister Juscelino Filho to inaugurate Infovia 01 in Santarém, in the state of Pará, during Amazon Summit week
Next Monday (August 7), Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Minister of Communications Juscelino Filho are going to inaugurate Infovia 01 in Santarém, in the state of Pará, offering connectivity to around 3 million people. The ceremony that will open the work week in northern Brazil — region that hosts the Amazon Dialogues and the Amazon Summit — will take place at the Federal University of Western Pará (Universidade Federal do Oeste do Pará/UFOPA), at Rua Vera Paz, s/n, Bairro Salé, from 10 AM local time (and Brasilia time).
Infovia 01 is part of the Norte Conectado Program and is connecting Santarém to Manaus (in the state of Amazonas) through 1.1 km of fiber optic cable embedded in Amazon riverbeds. The Infovia also takes connectivity to the cities of Curuá, Óbidos, Oriximiná, Juruti and Terra Santa, in Pará; and Parintins, Urucurituba, Itacoatiara and Autazes, in Amazonas. The Program includes eight Infovias that will serve 59 municipalities in the Brazilian states of Acre, Amapá, Amazonas, Pará, Rondônia and Roraima.
In the same place, there will be a visit to Ship Hospital Escola Abaré (Navio Hospital Escola Abaré), which provides clinical and dental care to riverside communities on the Tapajós River. The ship will harbor a Digital Inclusion Point (Ponto de Inclusão Digital/PID) with five computers donated by the Ministry of Communications (Ministério das Comunicações/MCom) for the digital training of the local community.
