Brazil's President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz met today at the G7 Summit in Hiroshima, Japan. This is the second time the two have met this year – and also an opportunity to advance issues addressed by both leaders in the past. Lula and Scholz discussed ways to reestablish peace in Ukraine and the environmental agenda.
Brazil and Germany's relations are ongoing, and there are presently several partnerships between the two nations. A recent example is the High-Level Intergovernmental Consultation mechanism towards solutions and opportunities by the governments of Brazil and Germany.
The Consultations are biannual meetings between the leaders of both countries, accompanied by senior members of their respective cabinets, to assess and promote partnerships and identify fields for cooperation and dialogue concerning global issues.
Relations between Brazil and Germany date back to the Germanic immigration and the German Empire. Reestablished in the post-World War II period, these relations have evolved into technological cooperation and several agreements within the scope of international law.
Equality among states; non-intervention in nations' internal affairs; peaceful resolution of disputes; commitment to international cooperation; respect for the ethnic and cultural diversity of peoples; and respect for human rights are all fundamental precepts to Brazil and Germany.
Bilateral dialogue is constantly renewed, mainly through Brazilian authorities' visits to Germany at various hierarchical levels. On November 11, 2022, then president-elect Lula met with Germany's Minister of International Affairs, Annalena Baerbock, during the COP 27 meeting in Egypt. They discussed Brazil's new environmental policies, the resumption of the Brazil-Germany strategic partnership, and the Mercosur-EU agreement. Baerbock also called for Brazil's commitment to the group of nations that adopt "feminist foreign policies."
Recent visits by German authorities to Brazil have been opportunities to enhance and advance topics such as environmental preservation, economic cooperation, and clean energy. Chancellor Olaf Scholz came to Brazil in January.
Other visits to Brazil by a delegation from the German Parliament's (Bundestag) parliamentary friendship groups and by Annalena Baerbock are also being planned.
President Lula and Chancellor Scholz have already planned a second edition of the Intergovernmental Political Consultation in Berlin. The meeting is scheduled for December 4, 2023.
