The Brazilian government's plan to hire two transatlantic ships — with capacity to provide approximately 4,500 beds for COP30 (the United Nations Climate Change Conference) participants — guided the visit of the UN mission to the port of Outeiro, in Belém do Pará, on Thursday, January 23.
Technicians from the United Nations Secretariat on Climate Change (UNFCCC) visited the port — which is being prepared to harbor the vessels. The area is undergoing construction to improve conditions for passenger transit, and to meet the needs of the Conference which will take place in November.
Valter Correia, extraordinary secretary for COP30 Amazon, highlighted that the Brazilian government has been studying possibilities to support the hotel network in the capital of the state of Pará, with alternatives that meet the needs of the different types of public that will take part in the discussions — including hiring transatlantic ships.
“We are going to expand the port of Outeiro, which is currently for cargo, and transform it so as to make it capable of receiving ships with around 4,000 to 4,500 cabins. There will be an exclusive road connecting the port to the Conference venue. This will be very interesting to attract public of a certain international standard,” explained Correia.
The UNFCCC mission will continue until Friday, Jan 24. At 11 am, in the Pará Government Meeting Room, a press conference with members of the federal and state governments will be held to assess the UN technical team's mission to COP30 Amazon.
