Brazil expands accommodation capacity in Belém for COP30

In addition to supporting the construction of new hotels, the Brazilian government is also funding the renovation of existing hotel facilities. "The Brazilian Government has been working to create new hotel beds for the participants of COP30 (the United Nations Conference on Climate Change)", highlighted Valter Correia, the Extraordinary Secretary for the event that will take place in Belém, in the state of Pará, from November 10 to 21 this year.
In recent days, reports of unusually high hotel rates and concerns about the city's ability to accommodate the 50,000 attendees expected for the Conference have sparked attention.
"We have been seeing a disproportionate rise in rent prices and we understand it as a real estate speculation that will stabilize with the increase of available beds the Government has been working towards. The people who come to negotiate their countries' stances on combating climate change must have where to stay", stated Correia.
As in all the COPs, Correia stated that the Federal Government will hire an official platform to manage accommodations for the conference. He explained that the plan is to register the entire hotel network, as well as houses and apartments that will be made available to accredited attendees of the event.
RENOVATIONS — In addition to supporting the construction of new hotels, the Brazilian government is also funding the renovation of existing hotel facilities. A total of BRL 172 million from the Tourism General Fund (Fundo Geral de Turismo/FUNGETUR) has been allocated to improve the quality and expand Belém’s hotel network and tourism services.
The efforts of the Federal Government are creating over 26,000 new accommodations for the event. "Cruise ships will accommodate around 4,500 beds. And the new hotels will provide an addition of over one thousand accommodations. The seasonal rental of houses and apartments is expected to provide nearly 11,500 beds. Additionally, the Armed Forces will contribute approximately 2,300 beds, along with adapted schools capable of accommodating over 5,000 people", Correia explains.
VESSELS – Negotiations for the chartering of ships are in advanced stages. The vessels will be moored at the Port of Outeiro, which is undergoing enhancements to boost its technical and logistical capacity to support the event’s demands.
The Government of Pará is making progress on the construction of a bridge that will enable a swift, approximately 30-minute connection between the Port of Outeiro and other conference venues. Additionally, the Belém International Waterway Terminal will be utilized to host vessels offering accommodations similar in quality to cruise ships, though on a smaller scale.
"The Port of Outeiro has been designated as a strategic docking point for transatlantic ships during COP30. The port is already operational and requires upgrades that do not involve dredging. This will allow the Port of Belém to accommodate smaller ships and vessels with its current draft, thereby increasing the city’s accommodation capacity", concluded the Extraordinary Secretary for COP30.
