Seminário da Astronomia do ON fala sobre cultura de colaboração inclusiva

Na quinta-feira, dia 21 de setembro, a Coordenação de Astronomia e Astrofísica (COAST) do Observatório Nacional (ON/MCTI) realizará uma nova edição de seu seminário. 

O evento virtual acontecerá às 14h (horário de Brasília) e terá transmissão ao vivo por meio do Canal do ON no YouTube. O tema será “Building a Culture of Inclusive Collaboration”.

Para falar sobre o assunto, foi convidada Dara Norman, vice-diretora do Community Science and Data Center (CSDC) do NOIRLab e presidente-eleita da Sociedade Americana de Astronomia (2023-2024).

Título: Building a Culture of Inclusive Collaboration

Resumo: The culture of astronomy is evolving.  The days of a lone astronomer and their single student collecting data at the telescope have been replaced by multi-year team projects, some of which are designed to address the scientific questions of many areas of astronomy with a single dataset.  These datasets are being produced by ground- and space-based telescope projects that will produce large volumes of data for researchers to comb through,  in some cases, not just days later but immediately at the time of observation for rapid follow-up.  These requirements have made understanding software development a key part of the skill set needed to achieve the scientific breakthroughs that we expect from these efforts.   As a result, teams of collaborators working on achieving these goals are becoming larger and more diverse.  However, despite these innovations, we remain groups of researchers and students, navigating collaboration efforts to achieve scientific discoveries!  In this talk, I will discuss why and how, as the paradigm of how we do astronomy shifts, it is also important to adjust our plans and expectations around how communication and collaboration function within our field. I will review some of the activities to support these new modes of collaboration and discuss where we go from here as the field develops further.
