Extragalactic and High Energy Astrophysics
Cosmic evolution of quasars and radio galaxies
Keywords: Quasars, radio galaxies, evolution, surveys, black holes
Advisor: Roderik Overzier
Abstract: The student will develop new methods to search for quasars and radio distant galaxies in large surveys, and will study the role of active galaxies in the growth of black holes, galaxies and the large-scale structure of the universe.
Requirements: Good understanding of English, experience in programming, curiosity and initiative
The Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS)
Keywords: S-PLUS, surveys, stars, galaxies, quasars, clusters, redshifts
Advisor: Roderik Overzier
Abstract: The "Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey" (S-PLUS) is the largest astronomical survey led by Brazil ever. With our robotic T80S telescope in Chile, we are mapping a large fraction of the sky in 12 filters, from ultraviolet to near infrared. The student will assist Project Scientist (Roderik Overzier) and a team of ~ 100 researchers in processing and calibrating the data and delivering and using data products ready for research. The student will also use the data to explore one or more topics of interest, which can be in any area covered by the S-PLUS (for example, asteroids, stars, galaxies, quasars, cosmology and more).
Requirements: Good understanding of English, experience in programming, curiosity and initiative.
Sources, duration and topology of the reionization era
Keywords: Time of reionization, galaxies, quasars, cosmology, clusters, HST, JWST
Advisor: Roderik Overzier
Abstract: The era of reionization (EOR) marks an important transition phase in the universe, covering the period from the time of cosmic darkness to the beginning of the formation of galaxies. The student will study the main sources of the reionization era (quasars, galaxies, star clusters), the beginning and duration of EOR and its dependence on the environment on a large scale.
Requirements: Good understanding of English, experience in programming, curiosity and initiative.
