CPF for non-Brazilians
GENERAL INFORMATION
Foreign citizens of any age who own or wish to own in Brazil assets and shares subject to public registration, including properties, vehicles, vessels, aircraft, corporate shares, single or joint bank accounts or financial market applications must register with the Individual Taxpayer Registry (Cadastro de Pessoa Física - CPF).
The CPF number is assigned only once (it is unique and definitive), and does not allow a second registration. The CPF number will be generated at the time of issuance and will appear on the receipt that will be given to the applicant. The number must be kept in a safe place or memorised, as "CPF Cards" are no longer issued.

I ALREADY HAVE A CPF NUMBER, BUT I FORGOT IT
Anyone who has forgotten their CPF number must request it in Brazil, directly from the Federal Revenue Agency (Secretaria de Receita Federal). Due to tax secrecy legislation, this problem cannot be solved by the Embassy of Brazil in Windhoek. If necessary, the request may be made by a representative of the interested party in Brazil, using a power of attorney.
STEP 1
Non-Brazilian citizens must draw up a power of attorney at a local public notary.
- If the power of attorney was issued in Namibia, you must obtain an appostille to make your power of attorney valid in Brazil. Click here for more information.
- If the power of attorney was issued in a country that signed the apostille convention, you must also obtain an apostille to make your power of attorney valid in Brazil: Check how to obtain your appostille here.
- If the power of attorney was issued in a country that has not signed the apostille convention, you must legalise your power of attorney at a Brazilian embassy or consulate responsible for that jurisdiction.
STEP 2
Your power of attorney + apostille/legalisation must be translated into Portuguese by a sworn translator in Brazil.
I NEED TO APPLY FOR A CPF NUMBER
As set out in Joint COCAD/COGEA Ordinance No. 53/2023, foreigners who are abroad must present their CPF requests to Brazilian consular offices abroad, through in-person service.
The application is free of charge.
