VITEM IV - Temporary Visa IV - Student Visa
According to the Interministerial Ordinance n.7, this type of visa may be granted to an immigrant who wishes to come to Brazil to perform any of the following activities (for more than 90 days):
I - regular course - primary and secondary education, undergraduate studies, postgraduate, technical or language courses, provided that they are offered by an institution duly registered in the National Registry of Legal Entities ("Cadastro Nacional de Pessoas Jurídicas" - CNPJ) and the minimum course load is 15 hours per week.
II - internship - supervised training, developed in the work environment, aimed at preparing/training students who are enrolled at a regular course in higher education institutions.
III - study/cultural exchange or research exchange.
Visa Application Form
The Visa Application form must be filled out online at https://formulario-mre.serpro.gov.br/sci/pages/web/ui/#/servicos-estrangeiros
Once filled out and submitted, your online application form will be valid for thirty (30) days. After this period your online form will no longer be valid and it will be necessary to complete a new one.
Instructions:
*Select your preferred language for the online form (by clicking at the country's flag) Click “Visa Request” (if the English flag was selected)
*Read the instructions
*Fill out the form as accurately and completely as possible Click “Submit” to receive your application number and receipt
*Print the Visa Form Delivery Receipt (Recibo de Entrega de Requerimento)
*Attach one passport sized photo (3.5 x 4.5cm), according to the photo requirements (do not staple it to the form)
*Sign the receipt in the square at the bottom of the form and on the very bottom of the receipt provide us with an email address and phone number for further payment instructions
*Either photocopy the receipt or write down the application number (número de protocolo) and keep in a safe place (it can be used to check at which stage of processing your application is at;
* Lodge your visa application on the e-consular website, by requesting a visa service appointment;
*Wait for the Embassy's validations of your e-consular request and follow the instructions given by the e-consular system to send the documentation to the Embassy of Brazil.
Required Documents:
1. "Recibo de Entrega de Requerimento" (RER) duly signed (as per instructions above).
2. A Passport, valid for at least 6 (six) months and containing at least 4 (four) blank visa pages.
3. A letter of enrollment or offer of study from the educational institution in Brazil, confirming acceptance of the student and indicating the length of the course, and the weekly course load, in hours.
4. documentation proving enrollment in undergraduate or postgraduate studies in a foreign university, when applying for a visa for internship or for study or research exchange.
5. Term of Responsibility between the intern, the Brazilian educational institution and the intern's home institution, attesting the compatibility between his/her area of studies and the activities developed in the internship, in case of application for a visa for internship.
6. Photocopy of round trip ticket to Brazil or ticket in transit, with flight numbers, dates and itinerary. Instead of a ticket, the Embassy will also accept a signed letter from the carrier or travel agent, on company letterhead, with the name of the vessel (in case of ships), itinerary, dates of arrival in and departure from Brazil.
7. Proof of residence within NZ or within our consular jurisdiction (Kiribati, Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu)* in the form of a phone bill, power bill, bank statement, or a valid New Zealand Residency Visa. * For non-New Zealand passport holders only. If the applicant cannot provide proof of residence in NZ or within our consular jurisdiction, they must apply for their visa in person at the Consular Sector during the hours of public attendance. However, the applicant must have a valid New Zealand visa. The passport does not have to be collected in person.
8. Proof of financial ability to support your stay in Brazil or proof of having a scholarship. This may be presented in the form of bank statements, credit card statements, or other documents that verify financial means of support or of scholarship
9. Criminal Record from all the countries in which the applicant has lived in the past five years, including New Zealand. Those records must have been issued within the last 90 days (to obtain your NZ Police Criminal Record, click here).
10. Self-addressed stamped envelope for the return of the passport. NB. A mail/courier service that provides a tracking number is strongly recommended – please keep a copy of the tracking number. The Embassy is not liable for the loss, theft or delay of mailed documents.

The Embassy may at any time request further information or additional documents as deemed necessary.
Minors under 18 years of age:
A copy of the minor’s birth certificate is required in all cases;
Visa and travel authorisation signed by the parents or guardians in the case of a child or adolescent, as well as an indication of the person responsible for their care in Brazil - the authorisation must be notarized and have an "Apostille Certification" issued by the Department of Internal Affairs (https://dia.govt.nz/apostille)
Processing Time
Processing time for visa applications is as follows:
5 business days for validation of your request on the e-consular system;
5 business days for issuance of your visa after the receipt of complete documentation;
The Embassy reserves the right to request additional documentation and to interviee the person applying for the visa. In this case the processing time may be up to thirty (30) days.
Further Information
- Visas are good for multiple entries
- Registration with the Federal Police within 90 days of first arrival in Brazil is mandatory;
- Applications will only be accepted if all required documents are enclosed. Incomplete applications will be denied and returned at the applicants' expense.
- Once your online visa application form has been submitted, it is possible to hand in the rest of the documentation and apply for the physical visa in any Brazilian Consular Representation. Your online form will be valid for thirty (30) days.
- Please note that the Embassy DOES NOT ISSUE SAME DAY VISAS, unless in case of a documented medical emergency.
