Ambassadors to the United States
Diplomatic relations between the Empire of Brazil and the United States of America were established in 1824, the same year that the U.S. government recognized Brazilian independence. José Silvestre Rebello, appointed by Emperor Pedro I as the Brazilian Empire's chargé d'affaires in the United States, was received by President James Monroe on May 26, 1824. The United States was one of the first nations to recognize the Brazilian Empire and is the country with which Brazil has maintained the longest and most continuous diplomatic relations. The U.S. Legation in Brazil was established in Rio de Janeiro in 1825.
In 1905, the legation in Washington, established in 1824, became the first Brazilian diplomatic mission to be elevated to the rank of an embassy, headed by Joaquim Aurélio Barreto Nabuco de Araújo as Brazil's first Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the United States. Also in 1905, the United States elevated its legation in Rio de Janeiro to the rank of embassy, headed by David E. Thompson.
The following table lists the names, positions and dates of exercising the official functions of diplomatic representation of the Government of Brazil to the Government of the United States of America.
