Academic research, scientific cooperation, academic extension programmes, visiting professors (VIVIS)

General rules

• Visitor Visas (VIVIS) are aimed at those travelling to Brazil for maximum stays of up to 90 days, without the intention to establish residence, for the purposes of academic research, scientific cooperation, academic extension programmes, and teaching (click here to check which other travel purposes it applies to). It is intended for researchers, scientists, and visiting professors, with no employment relationship with the Brazilian institution.

• Please note: the duration of the activities (start and end dates) must be informed in the letter provided by the Brazilian institution to which the applicant will be linked. If the activity is due to last more than 90 days, a Temporary Visa (VITEM I) must be requested. In case any of these activities are going to be performed under an employment agreement, regardless of the length of stay, a Temporary Visa (VITEM I based on Normative Resolution No. 24) must be obtained.

• Foreign nationals from countries with which Brazil holds visa exemption agreements benefit from Visitor Visa (VIVIS) waiver. 

• Estonian nationals are exempt from VIVIS as long as their stay does not exceed 90 days every 180 days (counted from the date of first entry, multiple entries permitted).
• USA, Canada and Australia: nationals of those countries traveling as visitors (VIVIS) are visa exempted until April 9th, 2025. After April 10th, 2025, travelers must apply for an E-Visa at: https://brazil.vfsevisa.com
• Alien passport holders (non-citzens/ undefined citzenship/ stateless) must apply for a visa.

• VIVIS holders are strictly forbidden to practise any paid work in Brazil, but are allowed to receive payments from the government, a Brazilian employer or a private entity for the purposes of daily allowances, artistic paychecks, compensation or travel expenses, as well as to receive cash prizes in sports, artistic or cultural competitions.

Required Documentation:

1. VALID PASSPORT

2. TRAVEL ITINERARY

One of the following documents must be submitted:

• Booking confirmation (paid ticket or e-ticket) containing the applicant's name and complete travel information (itinerary, flight numbers, arrival / departure dates); or
• Booking reservation or letter from a travel agent containing the applicant's name and complete travel information.

3. PROOF OF SUFFICIENT FINANCIAL MEANS

The proof must be compatible with the entire stay in Brazil.

At least one of the following documents must be submitted:

• Bank statements containing the account holder's name, current balance and transactions from the last 3 months (leading to the week that precedes the interview at the Embassy); and/or
• International credit card statements containing the card holder's name, available credit limit and transactions from the last 3 months (leading to the week that precedes the interview at the Embassy); and/or
• The last 3 payslips; and/or
• Confirmation that the student has been awarded a scholarship / bursary / maintenance grant.

 Please note: students being financially supported by their families must submit a declaration signed by the sponsors, in addition to a copy of the identification pages of their passports and recent evidence of financial capacity (see options above).

 * As a reference, the applicant must have approximately US$ 100.00 per day available to cover expenses.

4. TERMS OF THE PARTICIPATION IN THE INTENDED ACADEMIC/ RESEARCH ACTIVITY 

 Letter from the Brazilian education or research institution to which the applicant will be linked. The letter must be printed on official letterhead of the institution and contain the following information:

• The applicant's full personal details, including job, position and function;
• Description of the activities, duration, period (include start and end dates of the activities);
• Details of the institution and person in charge in Brazil (full name, telephone, e-mail etc.);
• Details of the conditions of the applicant’s stay and the agreement made between the parts (e.g. interinstitutional agreement, international agreement, protocols of cooperation / intent etc.);
• Declaration confirming that the activities will not be funded by a Brazilian source, except if the applicant has been awarded a Brazilian scholarship / bursary / maintenance grant (in this case, include details);
• Declaration confirming that there is no employment relationship between the parts.

Please note: the signatures on the document must be certified by a notary public ("tabelião"). The signature authentication will not be necessary if the document is issued by the Brazilian government or by a public-funded (Federal or State) university or research institution.

5. PROOF OF REGULAR IMMIGRATION STATUS IN ESTONIA (if applicable)

For foreign residents/ non-Estonian citzens

ONE PHOTOGRAPH

Photo must be in color, front view, white background, size 4 x 5 cm (document/passport size), printed in photographic paper and taken recently (3 months old maximum). The same photo cannot be used for more than one application.

VISA REQUEST FORM RECEIPT (RER)

• The form must be filled in online (click here). 
• Enter complete information – please note that some fields are mandatory.
• Parents' names must be entered in full (name and surname), exactly as displayed in the applicant's birth certificate.
• Click on the "Complete Application" button to generate the Visa Request Form Receipt (RER).
• Print and sign the RER; affix your photo on the indicated field.
• If the applicant is under 18 years old, the RER must be signed by both parents.

Gather all original documents listed above. They must be presented during the scheduled interview at the Embassy, along with the RER.

Please note that documents in digital format must be printed (including bank statements downloaded from Internet Banking platforms). Documents shown on mobile device screens will not be accepted.

VISA FEE PAYMENT

The visa fee is paid by online transfer to the Embassy's bank account after the Embassy has received the visa application and all its documents.
