Visit Visa for citizens of Australia, Canada and the United States
The Brazilian Government has decided to resume Visit Visas requirement for citizens of Australia, Canada and the United States. The decision followed consultations with these four countries on the possibility of granting visa exemptions to Brazilian nationals, in compliance with the principle of reciprocity. The measure, iniatially scheduled to take effect from 1st October 2023 and subsequently postponed to 10 January 2024, will take effect from 10 April 2024.
Citizens of Japan, who currently also enjoy unilateral Visit Visa exemptions, will continue to be able to travel to Brazil visa free, due to the recent decision from the Japanese government to reciprocate the exemption to Brazilian citizens.
The exemption was established by Decree 9731, of 16 March 2019, in breach of the pattern of Brazil's migration policy, historically based on the principles of reciprocity and equal treatment. Brazil does not grant unilateral Visit Visa exemption to other countries without reciprocity.
From the date of entry into force of the measure, the Brazilian Government will adopt the electronic visa modality, which was in force before the unilateral exemption.
In view of the interests of Brazilian citizens, the Brazilian Government will be ready to continue negotiating visa exemption agreements on mutual bases with the remaining three mentioned countries.
