Science, technology and innovation in Singapore
Elected Asia’s most innovative country and among the ten most innovative in the world multiple times by the Global Innovation Index, Singapore has an advanced science, technology and innovation ecosystem, composed of diligently interconnected institutions that act in coordination to develop the country's innovative capabilities.
Universities, research and development institutes, incubators, accelerators, intellectual property office, government development agencies and different ministries work in tandem to develop and implement the country’s strategy in this area.
Under the national plan to support science, technology and innovation, different ministries and government agencies share the responsibility for coordinating, guiding, financing and implementing innovation.
The Research and Enterprise Division (RnD) of the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) is responsible for programs in the area of Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering.

The Economic Development Board (EDB), also linked to the MTI, operates in several strategic segments with the objective of improving the competitiveness of the national industry through the adoption of innovative technologies.

The National Medical Research Council (NMRC), subordinated to the Ministry of Health, conducts programs aimed at Health Sciences and Biomedical Sciences.

The Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), linked to the Ministry of Education, has a fundamental role in the development of initiatives focused on innovative technologies applied to exact sciences (especially physics and engineering) and biomedicine, acting as a bridge between, on the one hand, universities and research institutes, and, on the other, the industrial sector.

The Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS), linked to the Ministry of Law, actively participates in the development of innovation strategies, guides companies to develop and protect their intangible assets, and adopts specific programs to foster innovation in sectors identified as strategic (FinTech and Artificial Intelligence, among others).
