The Ambassador
Marcos Bezerra Abbott Galvão has been Ambassador of Brazil to China since August 2022.
Born in 1959, the ambassador graduated in 1980 from the Rio Branco Institute, the Brazilian diplomatic academy, and completed a master's degree in International Relations from the American University in Washington D.C., USA. He entered the diplomatic career, as third secretary, on September 2, 1980.
At the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Galvão held several positions, including advisor to the secretary general (1982-1984) and deputy chief of staff and spokesperson for the minister (1998-2001).
Between May 2016 and December 2018, he was Secretary General of Foreign Affairs.
In other government agencies, he was also deputy to the Diplomatic Advisory of the Presidency of the Republic (1990-1992), advisor to the Minister of Finance (1994), as well as chief of staff to the Minister of the Environment (1993-1994) and the Minister of Farm (2005-2007). Finally, he was Secretary of International Affairs at the Ministry of Finance and main negotiator for the Ministry of Finance in the G-20 process (2008-2010).
Abroad, he worked at the Brazilian Mission to the Organization of American States, in Washington D.C., USA (second secretary, 1984-1987), at the Embassy in Asunción, Paraguay (second and first secretary, 1987-1989), at the Embassy in London, United Kingdom (counsellor, 1995-1998) and Embassy in Washington, D. C., USA (2001-2005), where he was minister-counselor and chargé d'affaires.
From January 2011 to October 2013, he was Brazil's ambassador to Japan; permanent representative of Brazil at the WTO and other economic organizations in Geneva, from October 2013 to May 2016; and head of the Brazilian Mission to the European Union, in Brussels, from February 2019 to July 2022.
He taught several courses at the Rio Branco Institute, including Diplomatic Language and Brazilian Foreign Policy.
The ambassador is married to Ana Doria Galvão and has two adult children.
