PROCESS OF LEGALIZATION OF DOCUMENTS ISSUED IN BURUNDI
The Hague Apostille Convention, signed by Brazil and 112 other countries, including Burundi, replaced the process of legalizing foreign documents in Brazil and of Brazilians abroad.
Since 2015, documents issued by Burundian authorities do not need to be legalized at Brazilian diplomatic and consular offices to be valid in Brazil or other countries, but they must be apostilled by accredited bodies in Burundi. The purpose of using the document in Brazil will determine whether or not it needs to be registered at a notary's office in Brazil.
Similarly, Brazilian documents must be apostilled in Brazil in order to be valid in Burundi and other countries of interest. In Brazil, the body responsible for the apostille is the National Council of Justice.
In Burundi, the body responsible for the apostille is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Ministère des Affaires Etrangères).
