National Library Foundation announces the Support Program for Translation and Publication of Brazilian Authors Abroad
The Brazilian National Library Foundation (Fundação Biblioteca Nacional - FBN), the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs launched A Program to support the translation and publication of Brazilian authors abroad. With total resources in the range of R$ 1 million (around USD 200.000), being USD 6.000 per publication, the Program will receive registrations between September 27th and October 27th. The amount will be invested in promoting the national literary heritage, through the translation of books by Brazilian authors published in Portuguese.
The launch was attended by the Minister of Culture, Margareth Menezes; the President of the National Library Foundation, Marco Lucchesi; the Ministry of Culture Secretary of Training, Books and Reading, Fabiano Piúba; the General Director of the Rio Branco Institute, Ambassador Glivânia Maria de Oliveira; the Director of the Guimarães Rosa Institute, Minister Marco Antonio Nakata; in addition to representatives of the diplomatic corps residing in Brasilia. During the ceremony at the Rio Branco Institute, the Minister of Culture Margareth Menezes highlighted that it is not enough “for the world to know our production. It is important that the country strengthens itself as a country of readers,” she stated.
The Program includes partial or total funding of expenses for: translation of works by Brazilian authors by non-Portuguese-speaking publishers; editing and printing of works by Brazilian authors by publishers from the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries; translation, editing and printing of comic books and works in the children's and youth segment. The expected financial support is from USD 1.000 to USD 6.000 for new publications or new translation projects. Reissue projects may receive support of up to USD 3.000. In all cases, the support to be granted under the Program is supplementary in nature, with the proposing publisher being responsible for the proposal.
The Program's Public Notice and respective regulations, in Portuguese, English, Spanish and French, are available on the National Library Foundation website (www.gov.br/bn), via the link at the end of the text.
