Certificate of Proficiency in Portuguese (Celpe-Bras)

Celpe-Bras is the Certificate of Proficiency in Portuguese for Foreigners, awarded by Brazil’s Ministry of Education. It is the only such certificate officially recognised by the Brazilian government.

The exam is taken by learners of Portuguese who wish to gauge their progress or provide proof of their level of proficiency; students planning to study at a higher-education institution in Brazil; as well as professionals who wish to have an academic certificate from their own country validated in Brazil, or who need to register with professional bodies such as the Brazilian Federal Council of Medicine.

Levels and format

There are four levels of certification: intermediate, high intermediate, advanced and high advanced. The exam consists of listening, reading, oral and written exercises.

Dates

The first edition of the Celpe-Bras 2024 will be held from 23 to 26 April. Candidates can register from 19 February to 1 March. Places are limited to 22 candidates in London and they will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

Centres

In the first semester of 2024, the Embassy of Brazil in London will oversee the administration of the Celpe-Bras exam in the United Kingdom.
