Legalization
GENERAL INFORMATION
To be presented in court or before authorities in Brazil, foreign documents must bear the apostille or be legalized by a Brazilian embassy or consulate. Legalization involves recognizing the signature of the authority who issued the document and applies to diplomas, school transcripts, certificates of origin, powers of attorney, contracts, declarations, etc., but it does not validate their contents.
The Consular Section can only legalize documents issued within its jurisdiction. In legalization of Malaysian documents, the embassy authenticates the signature of the issuing local authority, usually an officer of the Consular Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia (Wisma Putra).
Only original Malaysian documents or copies authenticated by the issuing or depository authority of the document can be legalized, provided they have been previously legalized by the Consular Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia (Wisma Putra).
The Consular Section can also directly legalize the signature of the following Public Notaries (without the need of a previous legalization by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia):
- H.Y. CHONG - address: Menara Tan & Tan (same building as the Embassy) - Suite 13.03, 13th floor, 207 Jalan Tun Razak, Kuala Lumpur. Tel.: 603-21640200. Fax: 603-21640280
- S.S. RAVICHANDREN - address: Unit A, 3rd. Floor, Wisma 1 Alliance, No.1, Lorong Kasawari 4B. Taman Eng Ann, 41150 Klang, Selangor. Tel.: 603-33442099. Fax: 603-33440079
- NEOH LI TING - address: Unit 10-01, Level 10, Wisma Central, Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur. Tel: 03-4819 4061. Email: neoh.liting@wnplaw.my
In strict observance of Brazilian law, the Embassy of Brazil in Kuala Lumpur does not legalize:
- Copies authenticated by a local notary who did not draft the original document, nor has it in their archives.
- Documents substantiating acts contrary to Brazilian or local legislation.
- Translations into Portuguese of foreign documents, as this must be done in Brazil by a sworn translator.
- Malaysian certificates of good conduct in formats other than the "Certificate of Good Conduct" issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia (Wisma Putra), which must be presented in its original format and previously legalized by the Consular Division of that same Ministry.
- Documents issued by Brazilian authorities other than the criminal record certificate issued by the Federal Police of Brazil.
- Documents issued by authorities of a third country.
Due to Brazil's adherence to the Apostille Convention, documents issued in Brunei Darussalam will be accepted in Brazil with an apostille from that country. Further information on obtaining this apostille can be found at this link.
Please send all scanned documentation to the email consular.lumpur@itamaraty.gov.br and fill out the appointment request form: https://forms.gle/HQ9qz1hE1rdsRebz7.
