Honorary Consulates

Honorary consulates are consular offices subordinate to an Embassies or Consulate-General. Its main objectives are:

• provide assistance to Brazilians residing in its area of operation, assisting them in their activities and defending their rights; or those who are in transit, helping them in their difficulties;
• promote the development of trade, economic, cultural and scientific relations between Brazil and the consular district in its area of operation;
• request, within its competence, the local authorities, the possible measures in favor of commercial and cultural relations with Brazil;
• serve as a support element for Brazilian diplomatic missions and consular offices;
• carry out any specific act of a consular nature, as requested by the diplomatic mission or consular post to which they are subject.

Honorary consular functions are exercised by Brazilian or foreign citizens willing to act, in local circles, in favor of the interests of the Brazilian State and its nationals.

The honorary consul is not a servant of the diplomatic career, nor a paid employee of the Brazilian government, exercising his function voluntarily.

Honorary consulates cannot issue visas, passports, certificates, declarations or carry out any notarial acts.
