Trips to Brazil
In Brazil, there is no obligation to provide proof of vaccination to enter the country.
However, the Ministry of Health recommends that all travellers update their vaccination status before arriving in Brazil, following the guidelines for the vaccination schedule in the country of origin or residence, in particular, vaccines for yellow fever, polio, measles, rubella, diphtheria and tetanus.
- Yellow fever
As instructed by the National Health Surveillance Agency – ANVISA, the Brazilian regulatory body for the health of travellers, Brazil does not require the yellow fever vaccine for foreign travellers or Brazilians travelling to Brazil.
Although it is not mandatory in Brazil, vaccination against yellow fever is recommended for all travellers, both foreign and Brazilian, at least ten days before the trip, the time it takes for the vaccine to create antibodies and for the person to be properly protected.
The vaccine is contraindicated for children under six months old, elderly people over 60 years old, pregnant women, women who breastfeed children up to six months old, patients undergoing cancer treatment and immunosuppressed people. In epidemiological emergencies, outbreaks, epidemics or travel to a risk area, the physician must assess the benefit and risks of vaccination for these groups, taking into account the risk of adverse events.
Yellow fever is an acute febrile infectious disease, caused by a virus transmitted by vector mosquitoes, and has two transmission cycles: wild (when there is transmission in rural or forest areas) and urban. The virus is transmitted by the bite of infected mosquitoes and there is no direct transmission from person to person. Yellow fever is of epidemiological importance due to its clinical severity and potential for dissemination in urban areas infested by the Aedes aegypti mosquito.
