Travelers without Brazilian nationality
Different countries have their own set of criteria and requirements for allowing foreigners to enter and stay within their borders.
These requirements can vary depending on the purpose of the trip, among other reasons.
When traveling to Brazil, foreign nationals should first be aware of their passport validity.
For Brazil, passports must be valid on the date of entry and remain valid throughout the whole stay, until the date of final departure from Brazil (there is no need for additional validity, i.e. validity beyond the trip).
Additionally, they must check whether a visa is needed, based on their nationality and the purpose of their trip.
More information on visas, visa types and visa exemptions is detailed on our website at:
Visas - General Information, Terms and Conditions
Visas - Nationalities that Require a Visa and Visa Exemptions
Visas - FAQ
Keep in mind that a visa is not a right in itself, but an expectation to be admitted in the country.
The final decision of a persons admittance in Brazil is responsibility of the Brazilian Border Authority (Polícia Federal), upon entry.
Kindly take note that, as it is international practice, the Brazilian Border Authority (Policia Federal) may also request additional information or documents from travelers before allowing entry, even when they have a valid Brazilian visa.
This can include, among others, international inbound and outbound flights, local flight or bus tickets within Brazil, trip itinerary, proof of accommodation, travel insurance, evidence of the purpose of the trip, proof of sufficient financial funds, letters of invitation, etc.
We strongly advise to keep all documents related to your trip securely with you at all times and ready for the inspection of the Brazilian Authorities, if requested, both upon entry and during your stay.
Attention: The entry in Brazil is the exclusive competence of the Brazilian Border Authority - Federal Police.
Thus, for any other questions or specific guidance related to entry in Brazil, check the Federal Police website or consult the Federal Police Immigration Office (DELEMIG) directly, through the contacts available at https://www.gov.br/pf/pt-br/assuntos/imigracao.
Travelers with Brazilian Nationality (dual nationality included)
Important: Brazilians with dual nationality
The recommendation for international travel to Brazil of Brazilians with dual citizenship is to request a Brazilian passport.
Just as when the Finnish traveler, when leaving and entering Europe, presents the European passport, when arriving and leaving Brazil, the Brazilians must use the Brazilian passport.
Furthermore, in the case of minors under 18, the travel authorization for minors will be inscribed on the Brazilian passport, which is mandatory for all Brazilian minors, even those with dual citizenship and traveling with another passport, always when traveling alone, in the company of only one from parents, or from a third party.
The Brazilian passport avoids delays and unpleasant situations at the Brazilian border, as well as perfectly avoidable setbacks, enabling a safe and peaceful journey.
The passport is processed quickly by the Embassy (see current processing times here).
Attention: The Consular Sector does not provide information on the entry procedure into Brazil without a valid Brazilian travel document (Brazilian passport) and the use of a passport of another nationality - the authority over the entry and exit of Brazilians without a Brazilian passport is exclusive to the authority Brazilian border police (Federal Police), during the analysis of documentation and travel circumstances, at the airport.
Questions in this regard should be addressed directly to the Federal Police, according to the contact details available on the PF website: https://www.gov.br/pf/pt-br/acesso-a-informacao/institucional/quem-e-quem /superintendences-and-delegacias
