WHAT TO DO IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY
Syria is an area prone to conflicts of a warlike nature. In an emergency, seek shelter in a safe place. According to statistics, the biggest causes of injuries, in an emergency, are extreme panic exposure to the protagonists of the conflict.
There may be failures in the supply of electricity, water, gas, telephone service and internet. Shops and supermarkets may be closed for a few days. That's why it's important to take some precautions, such as:
- Have a reserve of drinking water, an average of four liters per person/day, for five days;
- Have enough food, mainly canned or dry, for your family for a period of at least 3 days;
- Have bleach or tablets to purify water;
- Keep a first-aid kit, with the packages closed and within the validity period;
- Always have a whistle handy, a battery-operated radio and flashlight with new batteries;
- Learn and teach everyone in your home how to turn off your home's gas and power plant;
- Keep a field stove, camping tent, blankets, long-term medication and an extra pair of glasses, if applicable, in a safe and easily accessible place;
- Have a loaded fire extinguisher at home, make sure you and the other residents of your house know how to operate it;
- Do not place furniture in places that may interfere with the exits of the house (doors and windows);
- Pack a backpack and leave it near the exit door with warm clothes, flashlights, first aid kit, cash money, towel, toilet paper, water, food, a pair of hard-soled shoes, gloves to prevent broken glass and copy of your personal documents (passport, identity card, military certificate, voter registration card, health certificate, etc.);
- Have a plan for your family members to contact certain relatives or friends outside the risk area by phone. Establish two places for the family to gather/meet. One location may be close to your home and another far away, in case it is not possible to return to your home area;
- Keep in mind possible escape routes.
