- Your child will officially be granted Brazilian nationality upon consular birth registration, being considered Brazilian by birth.
- Without the consular birth registration or a birth certificate issued by a notary public in Brazil, it is not possible to obtain other Brazilian documents such as a passport. In order to obtain these documents in Brazil, the law determines that the consular registration be transcribed in Brazil.
- The birth cannot be registered if it has been previously registered at the Embassy, at another Brazilian Embassy/Consulate abroad, or at a registry office in Brazil. Re-registration and/or knowingly providing false information upon birth registration imply crime of fraudulent misrepresentation (Brazilian Criminal Code, article 299).
- If the parents were married in Syria or any other country, it is advisable to register the marriage at the Embassy first, and subsequently proceed with the child's consular birth registration, especially if there have been name alterations after marriage.
- The consular birth certificate will be based on the Syrian birth certificate, which is the document attesting the birth and the parents' names. It is not possible to register the birth without a document proving the parent's names.
- After registration at the Embassy, the birth must be registered at a First Civil Registry Office in Brazil (cartório de 1º Ofício).
- Citizens above 18, when requesting their birth registration, must present a recent birth certificate of the Brazilian parent. If the certificate has been issued by a Brazilian Embassy or Consulate more than 6 months before, it must be registered at a First Civil Registry Office in Brazil (cartório de 1º Ofício).
- * From January 10, 2024, all Brazilian citizens must have a CPF number in order to request services at the Embassy. If you don't have a CPF, please click here for more details about how to request one.
