Passing of Édson Arantes do Nascimento (Pelé)
The Ministry of External Relations has learned with immense regret of the passing of Édson Arantes do Nascimento, known as Pelé. Elected the athlete of the 20th century in 1980, he was three times world champion for the Brazilian national soccer team, in 1958, 1962 and 1970. He is considered the best player in the history of the sport by numerous organizations and entities.
The King of Soccer has projected, like few others, the name of Brazil abroad throughout his career. There is no corner of the world that does not know the name of Pelé and, through him, Brazil. Wherever he went, he attracted crowds that were delighted with his spectacular soccer skills and his always generous and outstanding presence. Pelé is closely associated with Brazil's image abroad.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs sympathizes with family, friends, fans and soccer enthusiasts in Brazil and around the world. Pelé and his legacy will remain eternal, as symbols of a sport that is the icon of Brazil’s identity.
