Memorandum of Understanding for promotion of the Portuguese language
The Guimarães Rosa Institute (IGR) from Brazil and the Camões Institute of Portugal signed, on March 18, 2024, a Memorandum of Understanding for cooperation in the areas of promotion of the Portuguese language, the Lusophone culture and the educational cooperation.
Based on this instrument, the two institutes will be able to promote joint initiatives to strengthen their international operations. One of the possible joint initiatives would aim to consolidate the use of the Portuguese language as an official and working language in international organizations and forums.
The IGR is responsible for developing, together with public and private agents, foreign policy guidelines and actions for the purpose of promoting the Portuguese language to foreigners and the Brazilian diaspora, the internationalization of academic institutions, the dissemination of Brazilian culture and promoting Brazilian creative economies abroad.
The purposes of the IGR include, among others:
- monitor, direct and guide Brazil's foreign policy with regard to the spread of the Portuguese language throughout the world
- prepare materials to support the teaching and dissemination of Portuguese abroad, in physical and digital format
- support and guide Portuguese language promotion events organized by Brazilian posts abroad
The Memorandum of Understanding between IGR and Camões, I.P. encompasses all activities related to the development of joint programs and projects, which are considered of mutual interest by the Signatories, predominantly in the fields of dissemination of the Portuguese language, education and Portuguese-speaking culture, based on pluricentrism.
