VITEM IV
VITEM IV - Students, doctoral candidates, school attendance, language and vocational courses and Internship as part of a degree course
This type of visa is intended for foreigners who travel to Brazil to carry out the following activities: regular courses, study exchange, research exchange or internship.
For the purposes of applying for this type of visa, the aforementioned activities are defined as follows:
- Regular courses include primary and secondary education; undergraduate and postgraduate degrees (specialization, master's and doctorate); technical and language courses. Regular courses must be offered by educational institutions that have a Corporate Taxpayer Identification Number (CNPJ). These activities must have a minimum course load of 15 hours per week. Exceptional cases will be analyzed and may be accepted at the discretion of the immigration authorities.
- Internships consist of supervised educational activities developed in a professional environment and designed to prepare students regularly attending higher education institutions for productive work.
- Study or research exchanges involve the improvement of academic qualifications through the exchange of knowledge and experience within the academic environment, such as: participation in sandwich and university cooperation programs, carrying out part of the Masters / Doctoral research, doing the compulsory undergraduate / postgraduate study module abroad (commonly called "year abroad", often the third year).
Length of stay in Brazil
- Validity period (deadline for first entry into Brazil): up to 1 year
- Duration of stay (period during which the person is allowed to stay in Brazil): up to 1 year
- Extension of stay: The period of stay can be extended until the studies are finished. If an extension is necessary, the person concerned must contact the Federal Police before the end of the period of stay granted.
Important General Information
Foreign nationals traveling to Brazil for post-doctoral research/studies must apply for a VITEM I, not a VITEM IV, as they are classified as researchers, not students.
For studies, internships or exchanges of up to 90 days, the applicant must apply for a Visitor Visa (VIVIS). German passport holders are exempt from the Visitor Visa (VIVIS) requirement; therefore, they do not need to obtain a visa for studies lasting up to 90 days. Other nationalities should consult the visa requirements table.
Foreigners already in Brazil can apply for a residence permit for study/exchange purposes directly at the Federal Police.
Student visa holders are allowed to work for pay as long as the hours are compatible with their course load. Details and clarifications must be obtained from the Federal Police.
This type of visa authorizes the applicant to study at a specific institution. If the student wishes to transfer to another institution, the Federal Police must be contacted.
